SONORAN PLEIN AIR PAINTERS
Chasing the Light
The Sonoran Plein Air Painters paint "en plein air," which translates from French to "in the open air." There is a unique challenge to painting in this way. The light is constantly shifting, the weather can present difficulties, and all materials, including easels, must be carried to and from the location. Plein air painters embrace these challenges and find joy in the experience of creating art on-site. The Sonoran Plein Air Painters seek out natural settings that offer both physical and atmospheric beauty. At times, these scenes cannot be captured by photographs in a way that conveys the full impression of being there in person. The process of studying a landscape and blending the artist’s impression with careful observation is what leads to the creation of a landscape painting. The creation becomes not only a work of art but also a memento of a fleeting moment in life.

ATHENA SOLAN APODACA
Generally Fabricated
From a compassionate perspective towards equal distribution of resources and welfare, these visual entanglements narrate psychological excavation and patterns of urban behavior. My art practice is partly defined by a desire to maintain a minimal carbon footprint so I integrate used materials, as well as domestically developed renewable resources. I suture together well-lived materials, leaving tails of thread exposed as a reminder of the fragile nature of lived experience. *This exhibition was made possible with an Artist Opportunity Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts.

Under The Sun
Under the Sun: The Arizona School of Photography brings together six photographers with MFA degrees from the School of Art at the University of Arizona’s graduate program Photography, Video & Imaging (PVI). Their work has been shaped by study and teaching in that program and reflects a shared commitment to rigorous inquiry, experimentation and critical engagement fostered through university-based photographic education. The School of Art’s PVI program has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as third in the U.S.A for several consecutive years following institutions such as Yale University and the University of California, Los Angeles—schools with substantially larger endowments and resources. This sustained recognition underscores the program’s academic strength, mentorship, and national influence within contemporary photography. Presented at a time when universities and education in general are under attack by the current administration, Under the Sun affirms the essential role of higher education in cultivating artistic practice and intellectual development. The works on view do not address this political moment directly; rather, the quality and range of their work stand as evidence of what education makes possible: conceptual depth, technical mastery and sustained artistic research. The exhibition highlights a lineage of teaching and learning that has shaped generations of photographers and contributed meaningfully to the field.
